Composting

Have you ever wondered what happens after you toss food scraps and yard waste into your green bin? Organic materials collected through the curbside collection program are transported to a local composting facility, Convertus, where they are transformed into nutrient-rich compost.

Compost is a valuable soil amendment that helps improve soil health, retain moisture, and support healthy plant growth. It can be used in gardens, flower beds, around trees and shrubs, and on lawns to add organic matter and nutrients back into the soil. Applying compost in the spring helps prepare soil for the growing season, while fall applications help replenish nutrients and improve soil over winter, turning yesterday's food scraps and yard waste into tomorrow's healthy gardens.

By participating in curbside organics collection, residents help turn everyday food scraps and yard waste into a valuable resource that can be returned to local communities and used to support healthy gardens and landscapes.

How to use your compost

  • For vegetable gardens and flower beds, apply 2 cm (3/4" in) of compost and work into the soil.
  • For new beds add 2 - 5 cm (3/4" to 2" in) of compost and work into the soil to 12 cm (4 3/4" in) in depth, plant and water accordingly.
  • For top dressing apply 1 to 2 cm (1/2" to 3/4" in) of compost to the lawn and lightly rake the compost into the grass.

When to apply:

Compost can be applied any time of year, but spring and fall are the most common times. Spring applications help prepare soil for the growing season, while fall applications help replenish nutrients and improve soil over winter.

Materials such as fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, grass clippings, leaves, and other compostable materials are recycled into compost instead of being landfilled.
