Parks and Trails Classification System
The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) manages an integrated Parks, Trails and Conservation Areas system that delivers ecological protection, recreation, and connectivity across the region. These lands support outdoor and nature-based active living, enhance regional identity and livability, and play a key role in natural asset management through the protection of wetlands, forests, waterways, and other ecosystems that contribute to clean water, carbon storage, climate resilience, and wildlife habitat.
To guide planning and management decisions across the full range of lands it manages, a Parks and Trails Classification system was established. This system, updated in 2026, ensures that future decisions about investment, infrastructure, access, conservation, and operations are grounded in a clear and consistent policy framework.
